“Hmm, so I think I understand how the TAFE course works… what if I want to progress further onto a uni course? Also, much of what we learn at TAFE seems to focus on the nitty-gritty of library work rather than the underlying theories of information science or library science, so where can I go to dip my toes in that knowledge without committing to a whole degree 🧐 ?”
Listed here is a series of annotated links to university library webpages that contain material which may be helpful to TAFE students.
Try searching “university library and information science subject guide” on Google for some decent results. Interestingly, American institutions seem to have higher quality resources than elsewhere. I guess it makes sense since the modern public library was essentially invented in America (codified by Melvil Dewey and the American Library Association [read the story in Melvil Dewey - Library Genius], and funded in large part by the philanthropic efforts of Andrew Carnegie).
- https://manuals.epl.ca/ < Edmonton Public Library (in Alberta, Canada) provides a suite of reference manuals and rulebooks on the topics of classification and cataloguing on their website.
- https://www.library.illinois.edu/infosci/research/guides/ < Information Services Virtual Library, provided by the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
- https://guides.lib.wayne.edu/sb.php?subject_id=161745 Wayne State Library (in Detroit, Michigan) - Information Sciences hub page.
- https://guides.lib.wayne.edu/LIbraryandInformationScience < The Subject Guide webpage for Library and Information Science. This is probably THE BEST university library and info sciences subject guide that I have seen so far. Many of the textbooks listed for the related subjects are stocked in the TAFE Libraries (ironically, the TAFE workbooks and assessments for the Library units do not make or barely make any mention of textbooks stored in the TAFE libraries…). Four Library Science units seem to be offered by Wayne State University.
- INF6010 - Information in Society Seems to be a general introduction to what librarians do and the contexts that they work in. Some mention is made about the history and ethics of the Library industry in the US, and of LoC Subject Headings too. There are also a variety of resources to help students make presentations. Overall, INF6010 seems roughly equivalent to TAFE’s BSBINS407 Consolidate and Maintain Library Industry Knowledge.
- INF6120 - Access to Information Topics include reference (common formats of reference material and some of their components such as indexes and abstracts), search strategies and boolean searching, bibliographic control. This might be equivalent to the TAFE unit of Search Databases
- INF6210 - Organization of Information Topics include cataloging standards such as RDA and AACR2, data structure such as MARC21 and BIBFRAME, classification such as LOC and Dewey, subject headings and authority control, descripting and subject cataloguing, etc. INF6210 seems roughly equivalent to the TAFE units of Participate in Cataloguing Activities and Undertake Cataloguing.
- INF7996 - Research for the Information Profession Topic includes research (anything related to gathering information), databases, statistics (where to find them and how to process them), literature reviews, and academic writing. The last two topics are likely included since library staff support students and scholars within an academic institution. I don’t yet know which TAFE units this is equivalent to.
